Outdoor Plus Challenge

In June 2008, 8 cubs from Cougar and Jaguar packs planned a visit to the Science Museum in London for part of their Outdoor Plus Challenge badge. They had to work out the quickest and cheapest route and think about what they would need to take in order to 'be prepared'! Here are some of their reports.

Last Saturday some cubs went to the science museum it was excellent !!!!! there were loads of things to do one of my favorite parts was the energy room. You could do a lot of things!!!! like games on the computers there was this giant pole and in the middle was an inner part and lots of small poles and if you touched the inner pole you get a small electric shock!!!!!!there was this small model building were you had to try and stop the electricity . Then my next favorite thing was the glass bridge by the name you could probably guess what it is it was a glass bridge that you could walk across the only bad thing about it to me was that i am scared of heights and it was high up and you can see through it!!!!!!

it was really fun accept for the preparation!!!!!!!!! but the preparation was a very important part and i want to thank all the leaders how helped us !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if i had the chance i would love to go again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to the younger cubs reading this i would recommend going there when its your turn!!!!!!!!

What we did on are preparation was we got into groups and we tried to find ways of getting to the science museum and we all got together and discussed what we found out and the best option we thought is what we will do.

How we got there was a long journey we went from Theale to London Paddington Then we were going on the circle line in the underground so we had to use the Bakerloo line to Piccadilly Circus then get on the Piccadilly line to South Kensington which was right next to the science museum.

1. Planning

All Sixers met on a Friday evening to discuss about a journey somewhere in England. We decided to go to London by train and the underground on a Saturday to the Science Museum. We used the internet to find out the train times and prices to get to London Paddington and the underground. We couldn't find the prices for the tickets on the internet so Sharon telephoned them to find out, Sharon e-mailed us to let us know that it would be £5.00.

2. Preparation

We had to pack some lunch and snacks in a rucksack and make sure we had waterproofs, first aid, my eye drops for hayfever, money, tissues and something to do on the journey.

3. Travelling

We had to arrive at Theale Station at 9.45am and we left to go to Paddington at 10.07am. When we got to Paddington we went on the underground and it was a short walk to the museum.

4. The Museum

When we arrived at the Science Museum we took a map which showed us the different floors and things to see and do. My favourite aspect of the day was the launchpad because it was all hands on!!

This year, 7 cubs and I sat down for a meeting to decide where to go and how to get there. We planned to go to the science museum in London. We planned to go on a train and then go on two underground trains for 20 stops in total.

Then we sorted out what we would put in our bags. Here is our list:-

lunch, light waterproof coat, first aid kit, camera (if necessary), list of phone numbers.

Everyone met at Theale station. We waited for 7 minutes and then we went on the big train. I liked that because there was more room to spread. That all changed when we went on the underground train! It was really crowded - I could hardly move.

When we got there we went to the bubble show. It was brilliant. The showman was making enormous bubbles. At the end he asked if anyone would like to put something in a bubble. Ben said a person so Austin was put in a bubble.

The whole day was brilliant and I can't think of any way you could make it better!
