Alps 2011
What are we doing?
In discussion last term, the Unit decided that they wanted to walk the GR5, an official French long distance footpath, which runs from Lac Leman (Lake of Geneva) through the French Alps, passing on its way the Aiguiles Vertes, Chamonix, the Vanoise National Park and so down towards the Mediterranean. .
When are we doing it?
The dates for the expedition have not yet been finalized, but the length of the expedition is likely to be two and a half to three weeks, during the summer holidays 2011.
Who can go?
In view of the challenging nature of the expedition, it will be open to those Scouts and Explorer Scouts who are currently aged 13½ yrs and older (i.e. those who will be 15½ years old by the end of July 2011). They must also be members of the Explorer Scout Unit at the time of the expedition.
What about training?
The GR5 is not really suitable for complete beginners. A substantial portion of it is over steep, difficult terrain at a high level, and the nature of the route requires full backpacking kit to be carried. However, since we are planning the expedition two years in advance, we will undertaking a lot of training as part of our normal Explorer programme, which will be of benefit to all. Certainly, for those who go, the majesty and freedom of the hills which we will experience will be breath-taking. (See calendar for updates on training programme.)
How much will it cost?
Preliminary costings suggest a price of around £400-£450 for between 2 & 3 weeks. This is inevitably only approximate, as the final cost will depend upon numbers.
Will you do any fund raising?
We will aim to do a number of fund raising projects (including applications for grants) during the next 2 years to try and bring the cost of the trip down. The more you get involved the more your costs will be reduced.
What if I’m not a Scout/Explorer?
You will need to become a member of our unit to complete both the training and the expedition. See the Explorer Home Page for contact details to find out about joining.
What if I don’t have any kit?
Don’t worry, a lot of the camping equipment will be provided by the Unit but you will need to purchase good quality personal kit e.g. walking boots, rucksack, during the course of the next 2 years. The unit will be doing various research projects and training sessions on choosing the right kit.
How do I register my interest?
Complete the attached ‘letter of intent’ and e-mail to the contact details on the home page. This does not commit you to either time or money but will keep you in the loop for receiving information about both the training and the expedition itself.
