District Scout Camp 2008

Out Scout troop attended district camp over the weekend of 27-29 June at Rushall Farm near Bradfield. Over 200 Scouts, Leaders and volunteers from our Scout district turned out for weekend of activities and for once gorgeous sundshine and no rain!.

We had a good turn out of attendees with 18 Scouts, 3 leaders and 1 young leader. The weekends activities put each Scout into a team made from Scouts from different troops from within the district. This gave all attendees a great opportunity to meet new people, work together, make new friendships and learn some new skills. Each team was required to work through a series of different activity bases over the 2 days. The differerent activities allowed the Scouts to experience different roles within group bases and to excel as an individual on single sporting challenges. Each team was given a score by the activity instructor and the scores were added up at the end of the event.

Our group organised the archery base which was one of the skill based experiences allows Scouts to try their hand at a new sporting activitiy. Other bases included:

  • Climbing wall
  • Survival campfire techniques and backwoods cooking
  • Orienteering (map reading and compass work)
  • Team sports (football and volleyball)
  • Craftwork (making woggles out of wood and twine)
  • Bivowaccing (constructing survival shelters from natural materials)
  • Laser tag grid (building a laser grid with ropes and trying to navigate though it)
  • Assault course with the added difficulty of manouvering a hand card around and accross obstacles
  • Rifle shooting
  • Archery

All the scouts had an opportunity to try each activity and have an extra attempt on some bases during their free time. Climbing and archery seemed to be the most popular (well from our perspective).

The Scouts attended a very entertaining campfire on saturday night with some great jokes and lots of audience participation opportunities. All the best campfire songs were sung and lots of moving about could be witnessed from all attending.

Take a look at the photos of the camp and activities in the next page that the Scouts got up to!
